Brittany’s infralittoral seabed: an objective partitioning into marine ecological units ArchiMer
Tempera, Fernando; Vasquez, Mickael; Caillaud, Matthieu.
Marine biological distribution patterns are largely regulated by the physico-chemical properties of the overlying waters. The availability of new environmental layers with sub-kilometric resolution is therefore of great use to map marine in objective ways and therefrom interpret biogeographic patterns, optimize region-wide field surveys or plan in situ experiments. This report presents a data-driven high-resolution partitioning of Brittany’s infralittoral seabed environment areas with comparable environmental conditions. Six major abiotic drivers of shallow-water biological communities are used to compose its environmental space, notably: temperature, salinity, oxygen, light, wave-induced kinetic energy and baroclinic currents kinetic energy. Each...

If marine management policies and actions are to achieve long-term sustainable use and management of the marine environment and its resources, they need to be informed by data giving the spatial distribution of seafloor habitats over large areas. Broad-scale seafloor habitat mapping is an approach which has the benefit of producing maps covering large extents at a reasonable cost. This approach was first investigated by Roff et al. (2003), who, acknowledging that benthic communities are strongly influenced by the physical characteristics of the seafloor, proposed overlaying mapped physical variables using a Geographic Information System (GIS) to produce an integrated map of the physical characteristics of the seafloor. In Europe the method was adapted to...

Emodnet Atlantic checkpoint : data adequacy to EU challenges ArchiMer
Populus, Jacques; Moussat, Eric; Blanc, Frederique; Quimbert, Erwann; Vasquez, Mickael; Meillon, Julien; Soudarin, Laurent.
After a time when observations of the sea have been made for specific purposes, e.g. for specific national purposes or to demonstrate a technological capability, the European Commission has now moved to a new paradigm where data are collected once and used them for as many purposes as possible. This means relying preferably on users rather than on producers to assess existing data sets and data sources and promote recommendations for a better satisfaction of their needs. The EMODNET Atlantic checkpoint (http://www.emodnet-atlantic.eu/) was designed to evaluate the fitness-for-use of current observations and data assembly programs towards 11 marine applications and prioritizing the needs to optimize monitoring systems at the scale of the North Atlantic Ocean.

EUSeaMap 2019 is the third iteration of EUSeaMap. All versions have been produced as part of the EMODnet Seabed Habitats project, which is one of several thematic lots in EMODnet. The project has brought together a European consortium of specialists in benthic ecology and seabed habitat mapping. The partners first collaborated in EMODnet phase 1 (2009-2012) to deliver a prototype predictive seabed habitat map in four trial basins (Greater North Sea, Celtic Seas, Baltic, Western Mediterranean). This predictive model was named EUSeaMap (Cameron and Askew, 2011). In EMODnet Phase 2 (2012-2016), the consortium extended EUSeaMap coverage to all European regions (Populus et al, 2017). In the new version, the spatial coverage was extended further North in order...

In order to most benefit from the potential offered by the European marine basins in terms of growth and employment (Blue Growth), and to protect the marine environment, we need to know more about the seafloor. European Directives, such as the MSFD, but also the Horizon 2020 roadmap explicitly called for a multi-resolution full coverage of all European seas including bathymetry, geology and habitats. The present work, following on a suite of past initiatives, has made a big step forward in this direction. It has first boosted the collation of existing maps from surveys by setting up a framework and a procedure to encourage people to submit their maps and data. This resulted in a more attractive EMODnet seabed habitat portal and a snowball effect with more...

EUSeaMap. Broad Scale Seabed Habitat Mapping Technical Guide. Based on the example of the Black Sea basin ArchiMer
Vasquez, Mickael.
This technical guide aims to help the reader understand, with a focus on the Black Sea basin, what composes the GIS workflow models that were developed as part of EMODnet Seabed Habitats1 phase 2 to produce a broad scale seabed habitat map, EUSeaMap. The general methods that are employed highly build on a methodology that was originally developed within the framework of MESH Project whose general principles are described in Coltman et al (2008). We highly recommend this short document be read before going through the current one. Further explanation on the way we employ some concepts such as fuzzy laws or Generalized Linear Models (GLM) in the context of broad scale seabed habitat mapping will be found in the EUSeaMap phase 2 technical report Populus et al...

Since its inception, in 2009, EMODnet Seabed Habitats has brought together a European consortium of specialists in benthic ecology and seabed habitat mapping to develop a transnational broad-scale seabed habitat map, named EUSeaMap. EUSeaMap is the only pan-European cartographic product that provides a standardised trans-boundary overview of the spatial distribution of seabed habitats across Europe. As such, it has been extensively used in various applications such as Marine Protected Area evaluation or cumulative impact of stressors on habitats, and it is likely to be used again in the future in various marine ecosystem assessments. It is therefore important to continue to update it regularly when significant improvements to the data products that...

The need for maps of the seabed has become increasingly urgent in recent years for a wide range of reasons and uses, including reporting on the state of the marine environment to implement EU policies such as the MSFD. In ten years, the EMODnet Seabed Habitats initiative has produced maps for all European marine regions, where input data allowed, the resultant seabed habitat maps are known collectively as ”EUSeaMap”. With products such as EUSeaMap, it is assumed that mapping the broad habitat types defined in seabed habitat classifications (e.g. EUNIS) provides appropriate proxies for the occurrence of the species or communities of species that occupy them. In addition to being released in EUNIS 2007-2011 and the MSFD Broad Benthic Habitat Types, the next...

Modelling Seabed Physical Habitat ArchiMer
Vasquez, Mickael; Hamdi, Anouar; Populus, Jacques.
Within the marine environment, the EUNIS classification system attempts to define key environmental drivers that describe natural benthic habitats. The hierarchical nature of the system is initially broad, but becomes increasingly complex at finer biological scales such as communities and species. This project addressed the higher EUNIS levels. Each of the contributing physical parameters were split into categories using threshold values defined with the help of benthic ecologists familiar with the relative influence of such factors on seabed biology. Climatologies were confronted to in situ samples and observations to derive most reliable values. Historic data sets were collated, stitched and harmonised into mosaics which comprehensively covered the area...

Monitoring of sea scallops Placopecten magellanicus in bottom seeding trials using video in Miquelon bay, Saint Pierre et Miquelon, France ArchiMer
Robert, Stephane; Le Moine, Olivier; Lunven, Michel; Caisey, Xavier; Gaffet, Jean-dominique; Le Gall, Erwan; Vasquez, Mickael; Rodriguez, Julien; Detcheverry, Sebastien; Goulletquer, Philippe.
Placopecten magellanicus production in Saint Pierre et Miquelon (NW North Atlantic) has been developed through direct seeding of juveniles on leased areas. However, most of the culture occurs in deep water ranging from 30 to 70 meters, which requires a monitoring by video to facilitate the grow-out and survival evaluation. In August 2008, a submersible leaded structure was connected by a video cable to the surface and observation screen was defined through the video, an altimeter and two lasers. The pictures were recorded on board on hard drive and digital video recorder DVCAM, and data were georeferenced by VIDEONAV software. Analysing the video tapes allows to establish a thematic database on the ground structure, presence or absence of seeded and wild...

Aim To investigate some of the environmental variables underpinning the past and present distribution of an ecosystem engineer near its poleward range edge. Location >500 locations spanning >7,400 km around Ireland. Methods We collated past and present distribution records on a known climate change indicator, the reef‐forming worm Sabellaria alveolata (Linnaeus, 1767) in a biogeographic boundary region over 182 years (1836–2018). This included repeat sampling of 60 locations in the cooler 1950s and again in the warmer 2000s and 2010s. Using species distribution modelling, we identified some of the environmental drivers that likely underpin S. alveolata distribution towards the leading edge of its biogeographical range in Ireland. Results Through...

Surveying coastal zone topography with airborne remote sensing for benthos mapping ArchiMer
Populus, Jacques; Laurentin, Astrid; Rollet, Claire; Vasquez, Mickael; Guillaumont, Brigitte; Bonnot-courtois, Chantal.
This paper addresses the need for a finer description of coastal zone relief that is currently of interest for benthic habitat mapping. For example, the distribution of seaweed species in the tidal zone will mostly depend on the terrain's hypsometric level, slope and orientation. These parameters can be used in predictive distribution models, or more simply merged with 2.5/3D imagery to enhance interpretation. Since the required accuracy is of the order of 20-30 cm, two remote sensing techniques, lidar and photogrammetry, were examined and conditions for their application were assessed. Lidar surveys have been shown to provide such accuracy in all instances, whatever the substratum and vegetal cover type, as well as with the slope values currently...

The EMODnet Seabed Habitats initiative and examples of application of the EUSeaMap broad-scale seabed habitat maps ArchiMer
Manca, Eleonora; Vasquez, Mickael.
European Directives, such as the Marine Strategy Framework Directive, benefit from full-coverage seabed habitat maps of all European seas. A time- and cost- efficient way to produce such maps is to use low-resolution datasets and models to predict broad-scale seabed habitat types. The EMODnet (European Marine Observation and Data Network) Seabed Habitats project aims to produce broad-scale seabed habitat maps covering all European seas in a consistent way. In its first phase (2009-2012) over two million km2 of European seabed were mapped. In the second phase the coverage of these maps will be extended to all European seas by 2016 and the existing maps improved. Predicted seabed-habitat types are mapped by combining a series of proxy measurements, such...

The EUNIS (European Union Nature Information System) habitat classification system aims to provide a common European reference set of habitat types within a hierarchical classification, and to cover all terrestrial, freshwater and marine habitats of Europe. The classification facilitates reporting of habitat data in a comparable manner, for use in nature conservation (e.g. inventories, monitoring and assessments), habitat mapping and environmental management. For the marine environment the importance of a univocal habitat classification system is confirmed by the fact that many European initiatives, aimed at marine mapping, assessment and reporting, are increasingly using EUNIS habitat categories and respective codes. For this reason substantial efforts...
